There is a time and place for everything.
Facing top-seeded Alexander Zverev today at the Beijing National Tennis Centre was not the time or place for Shang Juncheng.
A relentless Zverev stormed through nine games in a row annihilating an ailing Shang 6-0, 6-3 to surge into the China Open quarterfinals.
Reigning Roland Garros and US Open champion Zverev raised his 2026 record to an ATP-best 58-14 streaking into his 119th Tour-level quarterfinal.
“I’m happy he won a couple of games,” Zverev said. “I think he deserves to—he’s a great tennis player. He’s struggled with some injuries, but we all know how well he can play.
“I was ready for a difficult challenge, but I’m quite happy in the end it wasn’t. I hope it continues that way. I’ve got a very difficult opponent tomorrow but I’m looking forward to that challenge as well.”
World No. 2 Zverev set up a blockbuster quarterfinal clash against Grand Slam king Novak Djokovic in a battle of the former and current Olympic gold-medal champions.
Six-time Beijing champion Djokovic carries a perfect 31-0 China Open record into the quarterfinals.
The 39-year-old Serbian superstar holds a 9-5 career edge over Zverev, including winning their most recent meeting at the 2025 Roland Garros quarterfinals. But Djokovic will face a more confident Zverev this time.
“I’m excited about it,” Zverev said. “I think this is one of his most favorite courts in his career. He’s never lost here.
“Of course I’m going to make it very difficult for him…I like my chances, but again he likes the court so we’ll see tomorrow.”
Today, a commanding Zverev overpowered Shang, who took a medical timeout after the first set, detonating deep drives that put the Chinese left-hander in peril from the opening game. Zverev grew up practicing with left-handed older brother Mischa Zverev and sustained his dominance against lefties today.
Zverev has now won 48 of his last 49 matches against left-handers with his lone loss in that span coming to American Learner Tien at the 2025 Acapulco. Since that setback, Zverev is 20-0 vs. lefties, including defeating left-hander Cameron Norrie in his Beijing opener.
Thumping an ace, Zverev backed up the break with a love hold for 3-0.
Streaking through service games, Zverev zapped an ace down the T, capping another love hold for a commanding 5-0 lead after only 17 minutes of play.
While Zverev was driving deep blasts from the baseline, Shang was frequently forced to counter off the back foot.
Rapidly running out of ideas, Shang bunted a drop shot into net as Zverev served up the bagel set after 22 minutes.
Slashing his seventh ace down the T, Zverev sealed a love hold—his ninth consecutive game—for a 6-0, 3-0 lead.
The 21-year-old Chinese wild card hit a diagonal forehand winner to snap his nine-game slide and finally get on the scoreboard, drawing a sympathetic cheer from home fans.
In total terminator mode, Zverev stamped his fifth love hold of the match to extend his lead.
Serving for the quarterfinals, Zverev slammed one final service winner down the T completing an imposing victory in just 55 minutes.
